Constant Air Inflatable Standard ASTM F2729-18 Published

On October 1, 2018, ASTM International published ASTM F2729-18, Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Constant Air Inflatable Play Devices for Home Use. The new standard is a revision to the ASTM F2729-12.

ummary of the Revision to ASTM F2729-18

• Updated UL Standard 507 for Safety of Electrical Fans to UL 1450 Motor Operated Air Compressors, Vacuum Pumps and Paint Equipment

• Added clarification to the evaluation and added a figure for lines of visibility in section 5.5.1

• Minimum tear strength requirement has been deleted

• Minimum tensile strength has been lowered in section 5.6.1

• Section 5.6 has been re-numbered

• A note was added to section 5.7.6 regarding molten drips

• All figures have been re-numbered

• The anchoring requirements in section 6 have been revised and clarified

• All external corners along the perimeter of the inflatable device’s footprint shall have anchor points

• Section 6.1.6 was added requiring anchor points shall not be placed at the exit of a slide or access and egress where a child may come in contact with the stake

• Section 6.3.5 was revised so that he height of entry and exit regions of all tunnels shall retain at least half of their initial height inflated height at the 30 second mark

• Section 6.8.8 was revised to update that blowers shall meet the applicable requirements of UL 1450

• Sections 7.2.3 and 7.2.4 have been clarified that they are applicable to an access/egress step or ramp

• Section 7.3 has been revised to Hand Support and Rungs

• All of section 7.3 Hand Support and Rungs has been revised and the order of the requirements has been changed to a more logical progression

• The section relating to containment requiring that during deflation, inflatable devices shall not have walls that naturally fall outwards has been deleted

• Section 8.7 was added so that portion of slides or ramps, or both, that are below 700 mm (27.5 in.) are exempted from the containment requirements

• A new image was added in figure 19 that illustrates slide containing walls requirements

• Section 9.1.2 now allows slides 0.91 m (3 ft) or less are exempted from this requirement for depth of the transition platform on slides

• Section 9.2.2 now allows slides 0.91 m (3 ft) or less are exempted from this requirement for the slide chute entrance

• Sections 9.3.4 and 9.3.5 have been clarified on the specific portion of the slide on were the height measurement will be taken

• Section 9.4.3 has been added so that slides or ramps, or both, that are below 0.910 m (3 ft) are exempted from the exit region requirements

• Section 10.4 has been re-numbered

• Section 10.4.1 has been added that requires No head-first sliding. Always slide feet-first

• Section 10.4.2 has been added that requires the following or equivalent warnings, in ANSI Z535.4 consistent format, which states:

- WARNING – Follow Anchoring Instructions|
- User must read and follow anchoring instructions to ensure the proper: number of anchors used, soil conditions, and stake installation

• Section 10.4.5.1 adds an example of such a warning label can be found in Annex A2.

• Section 11.4.2 has been revised to add at least the following additional information:

- Stakes are installed to be driven straight down until the top of the stake is below ground level
- Do not drive stakes at an angle
- For best holding strength, drive stakes into hard, dry soil
- In loose or wet soil, or both, stake holding strength will be reduced

• An image was added to figure 20 to address the proper stake angle

• Section 11.11.2 was revised for clarity that this requirement is intended to pool or hold any depth of water

• Section 11.11.2.1 was revised for clarity that this requirement can be the cover page or the first page of the instruction manual

• Annex A2 adds wind speed label graphics
